ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book sketches the main historical developments of Korean education. It describes the contemporary educational system, its organization, curriculum, personnel, administration and size. The book examines the transfer from the United States to Korea of educational knowledge and models. It summarizes the major formal efforts at national educational planning and policy making. The book discusses the broad view of changes in the educational system and analyzes its interaction with the Korean society and state. It reviews the educational issues, directions and challenges. Education and Social Change in Korea attempts to provide students and scholars with an introduction to Korean education and the dynamics of interchange between the educational system and the rapidly changing Korean society. Because of constraints of time and reference materials attention is given only to the Republic of Korea.
