ABSTRACT

I was struggling inside the cramped portakabin which housed a very hot phone box on a very hot Greek Island, holding two struggling small boys and shushing them to be quiet, when I first heard that we were going to be doing Enemy of the People. It was Summer, 1988. David [Thacker] put down the phone, after what seemed hours of complicated conversations with people in England and America about why the Young Vic wasn't going to be doing Hedda Gabler (basically Hampstead Theatre had got in first with the publicity), and said to me:
