ABSTRACT

When I was directing The Crucible at The Young Vic in 1986 I had a strong sense that the play exists on an intellectual level and an emotional one at the same time. It is politically and socially comprehensive while being a powerful - and at the same time accessible - piece of theatre. My belief is that you must always be faithful to the text. You don't need to come up with apparendy new and original ideas when directing Miller. It's hard enough to express just what he was trying to express. That is in itself an achievement. An Enemy of the People, though, did present a particular difficulty.
