ABSTRACT

Arthur Miller took over as director of The Price when we were out of town in Philadelphia in 1968. I can't remember (or probably never knew) why the original director was dismissed. I do clearly remember that until Arthur took over I did not feel I knew what the play was about or where my character, Victor Franz, was coming from. If the original director knew, he was not able to communicate it to me; and I was unable to figure it out for myself. I'm reasonably sure the other actors were in the same boat. (Maybe not David Burns, who I feel had a special genius for playing Soloman.) Arthur did not restage anything. He did not re-do the show in any way. For me he answered two questions I asked him.
