ABSTRACT

I think it's peculiar to Miller's writing that the idiom is so authentic that it's foreign. So you have to learn a vocabulary and it affects you physically and emotionally. In Two-Way Mirror at the Young Vic 1989 we found it incredibly difficult to assimilate the lines. A couple of days before the play opened we were still breaking down at very short intervals in both plays. Even when we were playing, for the first fortnight we had trouble with Elegy for a Lady and had to cover for each other at least once in each performance. What was good about the production was that we seemed to learn more as we went on so that at the end of six weeks we hadn't exhausted the plays at all.
