In his last book, Recollections and Reflections, Bruno Bettelheim refers to the Jewish myth of the thirty-six just persons. 'Only the existence of these righteous ones justifies humanity's continuation ... otherwise God would turn his face from the earth and we would all perish. As long as these righteous ones walk on earth, nobody must know who they are.'
