ABSTRACT

Organizational theory is generally too abstract to provide guidance to practitioners intending to improve the design of their organizations. One approach to address this issue is to start with specific cases of organizational design challenges, which may then be generalized into more generic problems, for which there may exist generic design propositions that may be translated into specific solutions. Examples of generic problems are overlapping accountabilities, role inconsistencies (or role conflicts), excessive interfaces (or overcollaboration), conflicting functional requirements (or goal conflicts), and interdependency misalignment.
