ABSTRACT

Summary: In the twentieth century, educators felt threatened by the advent of movies, radio, television, and comic books. Would media and popular culture become more influential than schools over the minds of children and youth? What should be the relationship between schools and media? This chapter will focus on: Censorship and movies as a form of public education; Educators and the movie industry; Schools against radio in the struggle over control of national culture; Children’s radio and the birth of the super hero; Controlling the content of comic books; High school and teenage consumer markets; Changing images of children and youth.
