ABSTRACT
This chapter begins by outlining the development during the period both of the instruments themselves and pedagogical techniques. It is divided into the various groups of the eighteenth-century orchestra: strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion and the voice. It then moves into an explanation of the expansion of the orchestra and issues surrounding performance practice.
