ABSTRACT
This chapter is divided into two parts, both of which focus on the definition and history of orchestral genres. It begins by defining the concerto before proceeding to a more expansive discussion of the symphony and its related genres. Points regarding the social context, the structure, the instrumentation, and a brief historical development of this seminal genre are made, following which is a brief excursion into the closely related genres such as divertimento and serenade.
