ABSTRACT

Stage combat has flourished on the continent, thanks in part to two organizations, the Nordic Stage Fight Society (NSFS) and Stage Combat Deutschland (SCD). The NSFS came about from a series of workshops organized by teacher and fight director Peppe Östensson. NSFS Certified Teacher and current Chair Huw Reynolds adds: Oula [Kitti] in Finland is doing a lot of professional shows such as Lord of the Rings. In Germany, SCD offers a similar solution for a need for safe fights on stage. Its origins were a little more humble. In New Zealand, although a relatively small country, its own brand of stage combat is flourishing, thanks to fight director Tony Wolf. While SCD now offers weapon certifications, they are still committed to bringing in guest teachers from the UK and USA, including many BASSC and Society of American Fight Directors teachers and masters.
