ABSTRACT

This chapter considers in relation to solution-focused work (SFW). In practice, SFW can be used in a range of situations. It is considered a brief form of therapy/counselling and this is a purposeful position informed by the view that positive change can happen inside, outside and independently of the therapy/counselling setting. Solution-focused work, like many other methods, is informed by a number of theoretical ideas. There is widespread support for the view that while there are diverse forms of counselling/therapy, positive outcomes continue to be associated with what are termed common factors. In addition to employing the listening skills mentioned earlier, SFW provides a somewhat different slant on listening. Solution-focused work holds the view that change is happening all the time. SFW provides a great example of counselling social work skills in action. The method clearly draws on the core skills of listening, thinking and talking/responding.
