ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at social work counselling skills as they are used in group work. Social work skills are used to engage and develop the group itself as part of helping the change process. Group work is informed by additional theoretical ideas about group activity, group process and how groups can help themselves. Social work in the past was traditionally considered to incorporate three core components, often classified as case work, group work and community work. Start with the preparation and planning stages of group work and the need to think through a number of issues before even starting group. The new level of information along with pre-group knowledge and information provides a really good example of what is meant by the aspect of processing that is part of the skill of thinking. Considering reflection in and on action provides a related and important link to developing and utilising the skill of listening in the group setting.
