ABSTRACT

This chapter shows how professionals use data graphics in their work. Five distinct case studies highlight a range of approaches to the use of data graphics. The visualizations presented were used by the case authors in their work. They are: investigating the predictive power of Twitter data in a presidential election by Andrew Hamlet, analyzing and presenting predictors of startup success by Prasant Sudhakaran, reporting on project status by Adam Gonthier, identifying gaming behavior through analytics by Harry Chernoff, and exploring the opening and closings of NYC schools by Reshama Shaikh and Riyaz Shaikh. The case presented is an example of using data visualization to showcase evidence to support a hypothesis and implement a web-based interface to showcase the similarities and differences among company founders. The data graphics were created in Tableau and D3. The display types include dashboards, interactive charts, and statistical and multivariate visualizations.
