ABSTRACT

The process for developing movement onstage incorporates three elements: the floor plan, stage pictures, and blocking. Different forms of theatre architecture have an impact on the floor plan as well as the production as a whole. In most cases, the location for the play is predetermined, but occasionally the director chooses the theatre space. The space in the wings and flies is one of the major advantages of the proscenium theatre as it facilitates changing scenery. Entrances can be either from the aisles, as in arena theatre, or from the wings along the upstage wall, as in the proscenium theatre. Thrust theatre dates back to the ancient Greeks and is characterized by the audience sitting on three sides of the acting area. A black box theatre allows the production to make the choice of theatre configuration specifically for each production.
