ABSTRACT

The director with a more positive approach sees obstacles as challenges rather than problems. Before discussing rehearsal challenges, it is important to understand the psychological difference between a challenge and a problem. A situation many directors contend with is actors arriving late to rehearsals. The work of an actor who lacks motivation is uninspired and flat. The precision of the blocking is especially important as each actor's movement has a greater impact on the position of the other actors and sight lines. Ad-libbing or paraphrasing is simply a workaround for the actor. There are times when an actor appears to be working hard, is doing all that is expected, but is not improving. While rare, directors occasionally encounter an actor whose behavior is decidedly unprofessional and may even cross into areas of sexual harassment. Line insecurity sometimes becomes apparent during a scene as the director observes a weakening of the character.
