ABSTRACT

The designers are crucial since they create the world of the play. It is vital for the director to understand fully the individual and combined contributions of the designers. Robert Edmond Jones, a famous American designer from the early part of the twentieth century, referred to the designer's contribution as the creation of the "envelope." The reality may be that when directors know little about the artistic field of the designers, they may feel unqualified or at least hesitant working with them. Much of the director's leadership after the establishment of the production concept can be framed in the form of questions to the production staff. Many directors develop relationships with a design team and whenever possible work with them. The contributions of the sound designer directly impact the overall perception of the show far beyond the mechanical information. The scenic designer is responsible for the creation of the overall physical environment.
