ABSTRACT

The director has to take all the criteria into account in making casting decisions; however, the importance of each criteria will change from production to production. All directors understand that casting is one of the most important and difficult decisions they will make regarding the production. The director should then use the audition process to make the selections. While directors need to utilize every tool at their disposal in making casting decisions, it is important that they not stray into precasting the role. One of the more interesting considerations in establishing parameters for casting is based on the concept of nontraditional casting. In looking at the possibilities the director needs to keep in mind the strengths and weaknesses of each actor. The casting process involves casting a play from a talent pool from which other directors will also be casting.
