ABSTRACT

An exhibition was shown at the Art Gallery of Toronto, Ontario in 2000. There, the Canadian actor and writer Alon Nashman saw it and was also captivated by her Singspiel: A Tri-Coloured Play with Music and he too contemplated how this might be realized as a contemporary music/theatre piece. The first developmental workshop for Charlotte: A Tri-Coloured Play with Music was hosted by Canadian Stage Company in Toronto in their downstairs space – a former brewery with a brick back wall and raised auditorium seating. From the start the aim of the Toronto-based international production of Charlotte: A Tri-Coloured Play with Music was to find a way of realizing Charlotte Salomon’s world in three dimensions and preserving the integrity of her work. From the final maquette, preparations were made to have all the significant furniture made in Vilnius, Lithuania, where the innovative furniture studios of Domus idea use laser-cut Baltic plywood that can be flat-packed for transport.
