ABSTRACT

The New Jerusalem is an example of the inter-connectivity that is the basis of contemporary scenographic practice. The New Jerusalem is not a history play or a documentary but a free-flowing 90-minute music theatre piece that will be staged in a traverse configuration. The quartet will indicate the locations, and one scene will merge into the next. Creating The New Jerusalem in the historic tearooms brought together unforgettable characters, adventures, comedy, poetry, music under the umbrella of historic social realism, all achieved with the simplest of means in full view of the spectators. The New Jerusalem has minimal dialogue. The production sweeps through England and Europe at the moment of the new age. Speed, sincerity and truth combined with a total command of the entire performance space was the skeleton on which The New Jerusalem was performed to great effect.
