ABSTRACT

This chapter will be dedicated to the acquisition of mindfulness, and how the practice can be utilised in order to develop active listening skills, sensory awareness and an 'attitude of gratitude'. Mindfulness is purported to prevent anxiety, stress and sadness from spiralling downwards into prolonged periods of unhappiness. In order to develop a mindfulness of the body in relation to other objects, pupils will spend time balancing on different surfaces. Pupils will be encouraged to perform this task at a slow pace. Spatial awareness is a crucial aspect of mindfulness. In a line, children will be asked to wave their ribbons to the front, back and sides respectively. Introspection is key to mindfulness; without that ability to stop and focus ourselves inwards, constructing an 'attitude of gratitude', or visualising a 'place of peace' would be impossible.
