ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the issues concerning talent management, training and learning. Cruise ships have challengingly high guest-service standards and correspondingly high levels of manning, which arise from the need to be self-contained businesses at sea, away from their home port for lengthy periods of time. The crew are multinational and multicultural. The crew are expected to comply with company regulations and to maintain a social and professional balance so that they live and work together in harmony. This chapter considers how this can be achieved by examining how talent is managed and developed, how training is undertaken and how this can influence motivation. The chapter includes a section on how to understand training needs analysis before concluding by identifying a variety of approaches to skills development, including training, coaching and mentoring.
