ABSTRACT

In this chapter, cruise destinations are described and defined, and critical factors relating to the designing of a cruise itinerary are explained. Different methods for analysing and evaluating destinations are examined in order to understand the reasons why ports and destinations are successful for cruises and to consider operations and planning for shore excursions or tours. This builds on the preceding chapter on cruise geography, which reflected on travel geography coupled with factors including seasonality and optimum conditions for cruising. This chapter also notes the importance of sales and marketing and supply and servicing of ships, which are also important factors in designing itineraries.
