ABSTRACT

Punishment is always unjust, but in the foreseeable future it will not be possible to entirely eliminate punishment: there are people who commit genuinely bad acts, and society must be protected from them. While punishment can sometimes be justified as an unfortunate necessity in our unjust world, it can never be justly deserved. Open recognition of the inevitable injustice of punishment encourages the adoption of measures that will minimize the extent, harshness, and need for punishment.
