ABSTRACT
This chapter provides an overview of planning legislation and statutory instruments. This includes updates on changes to planning legislation and national planning policy and guidance in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. This chapter provides an overview of the organisation of the structure of influence of the planning system, distribution of planning functions, local plans, the London Plan, permitted development, planning permission, types of planning application, applying for planning permission, grant of planning permission, planning obligations and decisions including section 106 obligations and the community infrastructure levy, unauthorised development, enforcing planning control and challenging planning decisions. This chapter concludes by describing tree preservation orders, high hedges and protected species and habitats. This chapter includes updated legislation, key cases and key diagrams that are relevant to architects.
