ABSTRACT

 678. Abegglen, James C. and William V. Rapp. “Japanese Managerial Behavior and ‘Excessive Competition.’” Developing Economies 8 (1970): 427-444. The authors argue that many aspects of Japanese corporate behavior make the maintenance and expansion of market share an important objective of Japanese management. This concern results in “excessive competition,” which is the degree of preemptive capital investment and pricing. Since Japanese firms rely heavily on price as a competitive weapon, this is a realistic consequence. The authors also explain the suitability of the Japanese business system for this type of pricing policy and the cost-effectiveness of high growth.
