ABSTRACT
Chapter 1 introduces readers to how the author entered into what Geneva Smitherman refers to as the “language wars.” This chapter includes vignettes that help the readers understand the author’s lived experiences as a Black Language-speaker as well as her experiences as a teacher of Black Language. This chapters also describes key terms that frame the book and information that will help the reader navigate the remaining chapters.
