ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses that Curriculum development is precisely what term implies, namely the development of curricula for use in the further education sector. A considerable body of work in this field is now going on, not only in further education establishments and in a few universities, but also under the auspices of examining and validation bodies and Further Education Curriculum Review and Development Unit. When analysing the growing range and variety of research into further education, it is necessary to consider a number of factors, of which perhaps the most important is problem of overlap with other areas of the educational system and with training for industry and commerce. Among the more important national bodies engaged in promoting educational research is the National Foundation for Educational Research and the Social Science Research Council. As with research into further education, curriculum development has expanded considerably in recent years and there are now a growing number of agencies contributing to curricular change.
