ABSTRACT
In this chapter, the role of Islam as a reference within legal pluralism is discussed, as an analysis of law and justice in practice would not be complete without it. On the one hand, Islam plays a major role in the lives of people and in shaping perceptions of justice; on the other hand, it also offers an alternative to the other justice forums. I address questions of religious definition only insofar as they have a bearing on the way people act ‘according to Islam’ and the influence of God, spirits, the Quran and other beliefs on their legal life.
