ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book begins with the recognition that, with the increasing number of refugees and few states being willing to provide protection in Asian regions. It examines how the refugees overcame the challenges and difficulties throughout their individual journeys. The book looks at how they negotiated borders and migration controls and how their life plan is shaped and reshaped by their embodied experience of the stranded journeys in Hong Kong and Bangkok. It argues that the refugee agency is integral to their asylum-seeking journeys, which in turn have profoundly influenced their livelihoods, identities, relationships, and future plans. The book shows that “refugee” is a temporary and legally unrecognised status in both cities. Hong Kong or Bangkok is never intended to be a permanent home to the refugees.
