ABSTRACT

This chapter has two interrelated goals. First, it will provide an overview of the various known examples of private security companies working with victims of domestic violence in Australia. And second, it will outline what data was collected on those various case studies. Since 2015, this research has been gathering data and evidence on the various models and examples of security companies working with domestic violence victims. A number of important case studies will be detailed and an overview provided of what is currently known about the extent, nature, and contexts in which private security providers engage victims. A description is also provided of how this research attempted to gauge the performance of the commercial security providers and their impacts upon victims of domestic violence. In total, more than 90 key stakeholders were spoken to between November 2015 and March 2019, including 15 victims of domestic violence who had engaged with a security company; a large number of representatives from the domestic violence advocacy sector within Australia; multiple representatives from state governments and the commonwealth government of Australia; a small number of police officers; officials from several private security companies; and a wide range of other miscellaneous observers or actors who had useful insights into the performance of private security companies working with victims of domestic violence.
