ABSTRACT

This chapter reports on the many positive contributions made by private security companies to the problem of managing domestic violence in Australia. On many occasions domestic violence services were full of praise for their private security partners and saw significant value in using security companies to improve the type of services they could deliver. It was also often reported that their clients had strong, positive feelings about their experiences with security companies. This chapter discusses the potential of security companies to be a positive influence for improving responses to the issue of domestic violence. It will show that private security companies have the capacity to play a useful role in enhancing the broader ‘nodal governance’ of domestic violence. Many clients of domestic violence services report improvements to their sense of security and well-being, and many attribute this to the work of security companies. Likewise, security companies can offer a number of advantages to domestic violence services and help enhance their ability to respond to a demanding problem.
