ABSTRACT
What makes a plot emotionally resonant is that it is made up of two powerful elements: reversals and recognitions. Aristotle defines a reversal as a change by which the action veers round to its opposite, and recognition as a change from ignorance to knowledge. A sound plot is built upon motivated moments of reversal and recognition, and in the best stories, moments that surprisingly but inevitably change the direction of the plot happen frequently.
