ABSTRACT
Good dialogue has subtext, meaning that the thought that motivates the utterance is revealed by the speech, not expressed within it. This is accomplished when characters use dialogue solely to achieve their immediate goal, a goal that is never to prosaically state what they mean, think, or feel. The samples provided show effective dialogue that avoids being On the Nose.
