ABSTRACT

The term “academic” is often associated with traditional subjects taught in a formal school setting, such as reading, mathematics, science, and social studies. Suggesting that academic goals should be used in early childhood education raises the fear of imposing curriculum on young children that’s not appropriate and may even be harmful. If carefully matched to the developmental and individual characteristics of young children, academic goals can be used appropriately with young children. An integrated approach and using nature as an integrating context can foster early learning goals. Creative play in natural environments is an effective way to foster these goals in a non-intrusive, child-centered way.
