ABSTRACT

Three areas of concern warranting special consideration in connecting children with nature include (1) meeting the needs of children with disabilities, (2) promoting cross-cultural understandings, and (3) making nature more accessible to all children. Adults should be aware of physical, social, and psychological barriers often experienced by children with special needs and work to provide a more accessible environment. The cultural traditions, perspectives, needs, and interests of children and families need to be identified and respected. The issue of unequal access to parks and other natural areas also needs to be addressed. Thankfully, the need for access to and play in nature is receiving unprecedented interest in communities around the world. Related initiatives need to be applauded and expanded.
