ABSTRACT
The original Elijah, or Ilyas, as he is known in the Islamic world, was a prophet and wonder-worker of the ninth century BC. He was able to get God to perform miracles for him; people were raised from the dead, fire brought down from the sky, and he was also on one memorable occasion, taken up in a whirlwind. Sir James Stephen has quite convincingly rubbished the claims of Macaulay. There is no instance of a writ being served against a woman by the Supreme Court. The only writ against a woman was against Nadira Begum, and that was in the Provincial Court at Patna. In the aftermath of the execution of Nand Kumar, Impey and his fellow judges became very popular among the European population of Calcutta, but, as Stephen says, soon thereafter, the Court's reputation went into steep decline.
