ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses places for modern and contemporary art created by private individuals and non-governmental organizations – galleries grounded in collections, or galleries and art centers that operate alongside private collections. Institutions of this kind are significantly fewer in Central Europe than institutions of art financed with public funds; statistically, Slovakia and the Czech Republic have the highest numbers. I discuss their creators’ motivations and refer to the geographic context of these institutions. I am also asking whether these establishments are numerous enough and whether they sufficiently complement the landscape of public institutions.
