ABSTRACT
Introduction Awareness of self and others is a critical area of work with autism, development
here making an impact on many other areas of functioning in the child. I have
often noticed how learning to name feelings and read faces can have a
particularly positive effect on a child’s attention, impulse control, tolerance of
others and anxiety levels. However, in approaching work on the self, it does
help to consider what we mean by ‘me’ since children with autism often have
difficulty differentiating ‘me’ from ‘you’ and a poor sense of their real self.
