ABSTRACT

Below is a, far from exhaustive, list of some relevant creative works that are engaged with the depiction of madness on stage, screen, and in print. I have omitted both the examples discussed in the chapters and also the more canonical or well-known works such as those by Tennessee Williams, William Shakespeare, Woody Allen, Alfred Hitchcock, Sylvia Plath, and so forth. The list is offered as a tangle of threads for students and researchers to pick up, explore further, and braid with new connections. The examples are not offered as exemplars of any kind; rather they are a deliberately diverse selection (aesthetically, in terms of prestige and so on) in order to offer plural points of critical engagement. There is a bias in the theatre and performance section towards British theatre owing to my location in the UK. I have included a selection of novels (with a particular emphasis on autobiography), even though this book does not discuss prose works, as I hope these examples will provide a further fertile resource for further work. I hope that this may be of some use to students and academics engaged in the field of creative arts and madness.
