ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the technologies available in the safeguarding portfolio and considers the balance between intrusion and rights is fair and effective, and whether this technologically fixated policy direction is actually addressing the problems it claims to be trying to address. While algorithms can have an extremely positive role to play in child protection and safeguarding, they can also have a significant impact upon the rights of the child and potentially other actors within social systems. Awareness raising resources were provided by some online safety organisations talking about how to tackle the Momo challenge, and these resources were shared by concerned individuals on social media, therefore driving the Momo challenge further into the public consciousness. Data collected from NGO partners showed a 45,000% increase in searches for Momo in schools during "Momo week".
