ABSTRACT

The development of the trustworthiness auditability credibility transferability (TACT) framework has been informed by various discourses on 'rigour' that can be found in the research methods literature. Qualitative researchers are encouraged to achieve trustworthiness through the process of research as well as from the research outcomes. Achieving trustworthiness requires a researcher to demonstrate that findings are situated within the views generated by participants. Auditability requires the researcher to ensure that the research process is fully documented and described. It entails the provision of a record of all decisions made during the research process. Data verification is usually associated with quantitative methods but the verification principle of checking for accuracy can apply equally to qualitative research. The notion of credibility in qualitative research is similar to internal validity in quantitative research, but in this case it is an approximation of some truth. Transferability in qualitative research is congruent to the concept of reliability in quantitative methodology.
