ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces concepts and practices of digital audio production. It presents some basic information on how analog sound is converted to digital audio. The chapter explores some of the digital audio equipment and basic production techniques used in the modern audio studio. It looks at digital audio editing and multitrack production. Digital technologies have revolutionized how a person can record, edit, and otherwise manipulate an audio sound signal. Along with improved frequency response, wide dynamic range, and drastically reduced noise and distortion, the ability to rerecord with no decrease in quality contributed greatly to the acceptance of digital technology in audio production. Audio editing also gives the freedom of nonlinear recording that is, being able to record out of sequence. One of the simplest ways to get into digital production is to put together an inexpensive digital audio editor that utilizes a standard off-the-shelf computer system, plus some specialized equipment.
