ABSTRACT

Unlike the electronic and automotive industries, the seafood industry has been dominated by large local firms. Some became TNCs, investing in both developed and developing countries. Nonetheless, many local SMEs are still technologically weak. The chapter sheds light on different strategies in technological development and innovation between these two groups of firms. Interestingly, product innovations in this industry illustrated the convergence of various disciplines in science, art and services, which are not commonly found in other manufacturing sectors. The roles of universities in human resource development and research, sector-specific government regulators and promoters, industrial associations and non-profit organisations are investigated.
