ABSTRACT

This chapter describes global distribution systems (GDS) and their functions. GDS new entrants provided more cost-effective distribution services for airlines. Computer reservation systems (CRS) became an essential component of travel distribution systems. The Internet, being a universal and interactive means of communication, has influenced the electronic travel distribution system dramatically, especially considering consumers can undertake their entire tourism product search and booking over the Internet. The most interesting development in air travel distribution is the emergence of the New Distribution Capability of International Air Transport Association. The increasing competition and sophistication in the airline reservation and product distribution sector encouraged CRS vendors or owner airlines to adopt information-based strategies for effective marketing. The Cendant Travel Distribution Services division has been transformed into Travelport, which owns both Galileo and Worldspan. Amadeus is a leading provider of technology solutions to the travel and tourism industry with corporate headquarters in Madrid.
