ABSTRACT

This chapter helps the students to identify the elements of a package tour. It elaborates on the costing and pricing of a package tour. Tours are classified in different ways. Some of the most common include: foreign independent tour; group inclusive tour; mass-marketed tours; special interest tours/niche tours; long-haul and short haul tours; single-centre/multi-centre holidays; guided, hosted and escorted tours; affinity tours; safari holidays; and summer tours and winter tours. Some of the tours have a combination of transport forms for convenience and recreation. One major mode of transport is used for international travel, and it will be combined with another mode of transport for the rest of the travel. Inclusion of the elements in the package depends on the policy of the tour operator, needs of the tourists, nature of the group, price of the package, type of destination, intensity of the competition and obviously the package type.
