ABSTRACT

This chapter helps the students to understand the categorization of aviation and identify the elements of the air transportation system. It explains the international regulations in aviation. In fact, military aviation was a prime reason for the evolution and growth of modern air transportation. The airport is the hub of air transportation where passengers can board and disembark flights, airlines can process passengers for travel, aircraft can be controlled for smooth flight, and freight forwarders can process cargo/consignments for shipments. Under open skies agreements, airlines of both countries can fly any route they wish between the countries and can continue those flights into third countries. Air navigation services make air transportation a smooth and safe affair. Deregulation opened up opportunities for investment in airline business for private players. The tremendous effect of deregulation took place during mid-1980s when a number of mergers or acquisitions took place in the US.
