This chapter addresses environmental ethical debates over genetically modified organisms (GMOs). It evaluates religious responses to GMOs, comparing them to dominant arguments in agricultural biotech ethics. It also considers the related issues of market consolidation of seeds, patents, and labeling of foods, and specifically how they variously impact farmers. It spotlights some ways in which religious communities – from India to Ontario to Detroit – are responding to the issues through the creation of community-based seed initiatives.
