ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the author’s mixed-methods approach to the study of transmedial worlds: textual analysis and qualitative audience investigations (through surveys, digital text collection, interviews, quantitative and qualitative analysis of social media data, amongst others). it illustrates the textual analysis perspective with an exemplary analysis of the Call of Cthulhu world, and proceeds to discuss the qualitative audience analysis model with real examples from the authors’ own research methodologies, a discussion which also contextualizes the empirical materials that are used throughout the book. Two research cases are explained in more extensive details: the research design of a study of Japanese Otome transmedial worlds and the collection of data for a study of transmedial world memes on social media. This chapter can be used as a “stand-alone” chapter by researchers and students alike who need inspiration on how to concretely study transmedial worlds.
