ABSTRACT

Safety management systems are crucial to maintaining a consistent approach across an organisation, to capture institutional knowledge and manage improvements. But too often these are procedurals, bureaucratic processes that do not actually align with how the business operates. Consistent expectations should be set in a framework that allows different parts of the business to meet expectations in a way that works for them. The safety management system can be thought of as an ecosystem within which each component is designed so the natural thing to do supports the overall success of the system.
